Auburn – For a patient dealing with cancer, a small gesture can sometimes brighten a whole day. Such was the case for Karen Budde, a Sutter Auburn Faith Infusion Center patient, who was surprised with a free blanket during her treatment this week.

“It meant a lot to me to know that someone was thinking of me and wanted me to have this very thoughtful gift,” said Karen, 75, a Foresthill resident. “It’s so soft and I can use it when I receive my treatments, which are an hour a time, two times a month.”

Gold Rush Subaru of Auburn in partnership with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society donated dozens of blankets to cancer patients at Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital and Sutter Roseville Medical Center. The donation is part of the Subaru Loves to Care initiative that is teaming up to spread warmth and hope to those fighting cancer across the country.

“I am so grateful for the community partnerships that bring joy to our patients,” said Kastonya McKenna, clinical nurse manager at SAFH. “The community and our staff have done so much to brighten the experience of the patients in our care.”

This spring, the Sierra Passport Rotary spent several weeks making improvements to the Infusion Center’s patient healing garden by adding new flowers, garden art, bird feeders and a new irrigation drip system. The improvements were just in time of the center’s 10 year anniversary.

“They spent hours out there during hot days and it has never looked better,” said Linda Ballment, department assistant, SAFH Infusion Center. “The patients loved it and noticed the changes immediately. It is a nice respite area within the center.”

Wrapped in her new blanket, Karen forgets about the line connecting her to a machine and focuses on the positive.

“I have received treatment at this Infusion Center since 2010,” she said. “I’ve been fortunate so far. I can’t say enough wonderful things about the infusion center staff. They are a good team – so friendly. They are like family to me.”
