SACRAMENTO – An idea to give Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento Emergency Department patients a warm jacket has now expanded into a Clothes Closet to ensure all patients leave the hospital wearing clean clothing.

Sutter Medical Center Emergency Department Nursing Director Stephanie Johnson, right, spearheaded the drive to stock a Clothes Closet for all patients at the hospital.

“The cold, rainy winter this past year was really tough on our patients,” said Emergency Department Nursing Director Stephanie Johnson, so the E.D. asked staff and the public for coat donations. “We put a rack in the our waiting room with a sign that said, ‘If you need a coat, take a coat.’ We’d fill up the rack, and it seemed it would be empty in 30 seconds.”

In total, more than 1,500 jackets were given out in January and February this year to people who needed coats. “It was a wonderful feeling to everyone who donated,” she said.

As an extension of that coat project, Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento and SAFE Credit Union partnered to stock a Clothes Closet that will be accessible to nursing staff throughout the hospital to give every adult patient a proper set of clothing upon discharge.

“We have set up a Clothes Closet where the clothes are hanging up and are organized by size,” Johnson said. “If you’re a nurse or tech and you need clothes for your patient, you just go to the Clothes Closet and grab a matching outfit in the patient’s size. It’s that easy.”

This week was the official Clothes Closet Drive being held at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento as well as the SAFE branch in the Galleria on K Street and its corporate offices in Folsom. Hundreds of pieces of clothing have been donated, already filling a room in the Sutter Medical Center Emergency Department. However, the need will be continuing, and there are items that will need to be purchased new, such as underwear and socks. That’s where SAFE and the Sutter Medical Center Foundation come in.

SAFE Credit Union donated $1,500 to the Clothes Closet to give it a good start, and Sutter Medical Center’s philanthropy arm is accepting cash donations and recurring payroll deductions from employees to fund the expected future needs for the Clothes Closet.

“SAFE Credit Union really believes strongly in the financial wellness and health of our community,” said Amanda Merz, SAFE’s Community Advocacy and Engagement Manager. “It is rewarding to know that patients are going to be able to leave Sutter Medical Center in a better situation, not only physically but also with dignity.”

To help sustain the ongoing availability of the SMCS Clothes Closet through funds, contact Philanthropy Coordinator Mary Anne Zbyczik at ZbycziM@sutterhealth.org. If anyone wishes to donate clothing, the hospital is accepting gently used or new men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, jackets and sturdy plastic coat hangers. They can be brought to the Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento Emergency Department at the corner of 28th and L streets and left with staff at the front desk.
