Crescent City – Every two seconds in the U.S., a person is in need of blood. Sutter Coast Hospital in partnership with the Northern California Community Blood Bank (NCCBB) encourages Del Norte residents to attend the blood drive at the hospital on May 23.

“We rely heavily on our bloodmobile events to reach members of the community,” said Dee Vallee, donor recruiter with Northern California Community Blood Bank. “The bloodmobile helps supply roughly 70 percent of our blood supply.”

According to the blood bank, the entire blood donation process (screening, healthiness test and the donation) takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour and is relatively pain free.

“The summer is an important time to donate,” said Rose Corcoran, chief nurse executive at Sutter Coast Hospital. “Our physicians, nurses and staff members understand the importance of the blood drive and encourage the community to join them in supporting the blood drive for those patients who need it most.”

WHO:              Healthy individuals who feel well and have not donated in the past eight weeks days are encouraged to attend.  For questions about eligibility, please call the NCCBB at 707-443-8004 or visit www.nccbbnet.

WHEN:         9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday, May 23, 2017

WHERE:       Sutter Coast Hospital

800 E. Washington Blvd

Crescent City

WHY:             There are many reasons to give! Blood donations are used in emergency situations such as car accidents but also for patients diagnosed with cancer. Some cancer patients require one blood donation a day during chemotherapy treatments. One blood donation can be used to help three patients in need.

The Northern California Blood Bank is located in Eureka and serves several areas including Humboldt and Del Norte counties. Sutter Coast Hospital hosts quarterly blood drives at the hospital in partnership with the NCCBB. Last fall, Sutter Coast sponsored the largest donation drive in Del Norte County at the 2016 Halloween event.

For information on local blood drives, please call 707-443-8004.
