World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year, August 1-7, in more than 170 countries to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the globe. The 2016 theme is Breastfeeding: A Key to Sustainable Development.

“Breastfeeding is a key element in getting us to think about how to value our well-beingA from the start of life, how to respect each other and care for the world we share,” said Jane Snyder, R.N., Family Birth Center, SAH. “Breastfeeding provides nutrition, food security and, thus, poverty reduction. Breastfeeding also increases the survival, health and well-being of people everywhere.”

SAH’s Family Birth Center has been holding its Breastfeeding Success group since 2004. Mothers and babies gather to get assistance from a certified lactation consultant at no charge. Mothers love to weigh their babies to monitor their growth and exchange helpful ideas on breastfeeding, baby care and motherhood.

All moms and babies in the community are welcome. For more information on the hospital’s prenatal breastfeeding classes or the Breastfeeding Success group, call 209-223-7452.
