Ninety-four percent of Sutter Surgical Hospital patients responded “definitely yes” when asked, “Would you recommend this hospital to your friends and family?” in the national Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS, pronounced H-caps) survey. The latest figures are reported on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Hospital Compare website and were collected between July 2014 and June 2015.

The 94 percent rating is much higher than the California average of 69 percent and the national average of 71 percent. In California, only Patients’ Hospital of Redding received a higher score, 97 percent. Another Sutter Health hospital, Sutter Maternity & Surgery Center of Santa Cruz, ranked third with 92 percent.

The survey question’s results were recently published online in Becker’s Hospital Review in a story titled, “Top 6 California hospitals patients would definitely recommend.”

“Undergoing surgery is never a fun experience, but we make it our mission to ensure patients get the highest-quality, most comfortable care possible during their stay here,” said Dennis Sindelar, Chief Administrative Officer of Sutter Surgical Hospital-North Valley. “Sutter Surgical Hospital is designed to offer the medical excellence and compassionate care that are needed to restore good health.”

Sutter Surgical Hospital-North Valley is a state-of-the-art facility that focuses on inpatient and outpatient surgery, as well as outpatient open MRI. It has received numerous awards and recognitions, ranking among the highest in Sacramento Valley for patient safety, joint replacement surgery, gynecological surgery and patient satisfaction. The HCAHPS Survey is the first national, standardized, publicly reported survey of patients’ perspectives of hospital care. HCAHPS is a 32-item survey instrument and data collection methodology for measuring patients’ perceptions of their hospital experience. While many hospitals have collected information on patient satisfaction for their own internal use, until HCAHPS there were no common metrics and no national standards for collecting and publicly reporting information about patient experience of care. Since 2008, HCAHPS has allowed valid comparisons to be made across hospitals locally, regionally and nationally.

The hospital recommendation question is No. 22 on the HCAHPS survey, and patients are given four possible responses if they would recommend the hospital: definitely no, probably no, probably yes, and definitely yes. The Hospital Compare website reports the percentage of patients who marked “definitely yes.”
