VALLEJO, Calif. – The labor and delivery staff at Sutter Solano Medical Center came to the rescue of a mother and father who pulled up to the hospital just in the nick of time.

With several labor and delivery nurses and staff members huddled around the family’s car, the staff delivered a healthy baby boy, Manuel, at 2:45 p.m. on Sept. 18 – right there in the car.

“We wanted to take the mom into the hospital, but she said the baby was coming fast,” said Barbara Grove-Turek, R.N., Sutter Solano Medical Center. “The baby was already out to its ears so we elected to stay where we were.”

A physician arrived on scene a short time later and the birth was over almost immediately. The mother said her previous labor lasted between 10-12 hours.

SSMC staff continued to provide support after the baby was born. The ultrasound staff brought a gurney and blankets to transport baby and mom into the hospital and the hospital’s Chief Nursing Executive Angie Hammons even cleaned the car for the family.
