DAVIS, Calif. – Sutter Davis Hospital is now accepting applications for the hospital’s Volunteer Doula Program. The online application is open from Aug. 23- Sept. 1.

Doulas provide continuous physical, emotional and informational support to mothers during the childbirth process. The Sutter Davis Hospital Volunteer Doula Program is administered by Birthing Center nurses with many years of experience supporting women in labor.

“We greatly appreciate having prospective volunteer doulas join our labor support team,” said Kim Andersen Johnson, R.N.C., doula co-coordinator, Sutter Davis Hospital. “Evidence shows that women who have doulas attend their birth have fewer medical interventions and verbalize a more rewarding, joyous and memorable birth experience.”

The Sutter Davis Hospital Doula Program is a highly sought after opportunity with rigorous requirements. Those who apply, and are accepted to the program, agree to a minimum of a two-year commitment and will be expected to fulfill a minimum of 16 hours of call a month. They also must attend quarterly meetings, are offered continuing education and periodic outreach opportunities designed to educate the community about doulas and the hospital’s volunteer program.

Orientations are held in the spring and fall. Acceptance to the program is through an online application and interview process. Accepted candidates must also complete a medical screen and background check within six weeks of being accepted into the program and before being cleared to start. Orientation is a mandatory Saturday in the classroom, followed by mentoring experiences with seasoned mentor doulas.

“Our Doula Program is physically and emotionally demanding, but the rewards are life-altering. Nothing can compare to a woman holding her newborn sharing, ‘I couldn’t have done it without you,’” said Andersen Johnson.
