VALLEJO – Sutter Solano Cancer Center hosted more than 20 cancer survivors, their loved ones and caregivers for a survivor reception Tuesday evening leading up to Vallejo’s Relay for Life event.

The event was held in partnership with the American Cancer Society.

Rick Siefke a social worker at Sutter Solano Medical Center, shared personal and professional experiences with cancer and explained the resources available to the community through the American Cancer Society. Rick is a nine-year cancer survivor, having been diagnosed with Basel cell skin cancer. For 19 years, he has worked with cancer patients and their loved ones both as a volunteer with American Cancer Society and as a professional in the health care industry.

“For a long time, cancer was a dirty word,” Siefke told the group. “But thanks to Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society, we have a sense of hope. People now say ‘We can beat this.’”

Attendees toured Sutter Solano Cancer Center, learning about the services offered while also meeting staff. Information was also provided about the American Cancer Society by ACS volunteers.

Vallejo’s Relay for Life takes place on Aug. 1 at St. Patrick’s-St. Vincent’s High School.
