Auburn, Calif. – Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital (SAFH) is now home to a 3D mammography machine. The hospital will have a second 3D mammography unit up and running later this year.

3D mammography, also called tomosynthesis, captures images of each breast at every degree over a 15 degree arc in two planes. This creates hundreds of images of the breast rather than the traditional four images provided by a digital mammogram with a similar radiation dose. Tomosynthesis images allow the radiologist to scan through the breast in 1 millimeter increments, enabling the radiologist to differentiate overlapping breast tissue simulating a mass from a true breast cancer.  This increases breast cancer detection and decreases the need for additional images and biopsies allowing for quicker diagnosis and peace of mind for patients.

“3D mammography is currently the best cancer screening technology available,” said Radiologist Michael J. Hecimovich, D.O., Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital.

A study released last year, which included 13 academic and community hospitals, found that 3D mammography, used with traditional digital mammograms, increased the detection rate of invasive breast cancers by more than 40 percent.

The 3D mammography machine was purchased with funds made possible by the Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital Foundation and is the most recent upgrade of SAFH’s imaging department. Last year, the hospital also added a low-dose 128-slice CT scanner and a new nuclear camera.

“The Auburn community is always very supportive of new diagnostic equipment and programs,” said Mindy Danovaro, Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital Foundation Executive Director. “The combination of amazing community support and our outstanding physicians enables the hospital to provide the best care possible.”

Local community members interested in learning more about 3D mammograms should ask their physician about their breast cancer screening options. Physicians with questions can contact (530) 888-4535 for more information on SAFH’s imaging offerings.
