SACRAMENTO – Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento is the only Northern California medical center named on Truven Health Analytics’ 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals for 2015, the third year in a row the Sutter hospital has received this honor. It is also the only California hospital to be honored under the category of “Teaching Hospitals Without Cardiovascular Residency Programs.”

50TopCardioTruven Health Analytics, a leading, unbiased provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare, is the same organization that named Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals the past two years.

According to Truven, this year’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study provides key industry insights, including the fact that if all cardiovascular providers performed at the level of this year’s winners:

  • Nearly 9,500 additional lives could be saved.
  • Nearly 3,000 more bypass and angioplasty patients could be complication-free.
  • More than $1.1 billion could be saved.

In addition, the 2015 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals had:

  • Significantly higher inpatient survival than non-winning cardiovascular hospitals (19-30 percent higher).
  • Far fewer patient complications (6-13 percent fewer).
  • Higher 30-day survival rates for heart attack and heart failure patients (0.4-0.9 percentage points higher).
  • Lower readmissions rates for heart attack and heart failure patients (0.3-0.5 percentage points lower).
  • Better Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Core Measures scores (1.1-1.7 percentage points higher).
  • ½- to one-day lower average lengths of stay.
  • $750-$4,000 lower cost per patient case.

David Roberts, M.D., the medical director of the Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute, says the award is representative not only of the expertise, quality and advanced treatments offered at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, but also of a team approach instituted at the Sacramento hospital.

“A patient undergoing a complicated heart procedure usually sees a blur of physicians and other clinicians, including the cardiac surgeon, anesthesiologist, nurse practitioner, interventional cardiologist, nurses and physician assistant,” he said. “To be successful and deliver the best care really requires every one of those pieces to be working together. It’s got to be patient-centric.”

Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento’s cardiovascular services are part of the Sacramento Sierra Region’s Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute, and the Sacramento hospital has the only heart transplant program in Northern California outside the Bay Area. The advanced heart treatments at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento include ventricular assist devices – mechanical heart pumps that keep patients in cardiac failure alive – and transcatheter aortic valve replacement, which replaces a damaged aortic heart valve without open-heart surgery. In 2012, Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento became just the second cardiac center in the nation to receive full Atrial Fibrillation Certification status from the Society of Chest Pain Centers.

The Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute is headquartered at Sutter Memorial Hospital, where many of the Sacramento region’s firsts in cardiac care were performed, including the first open-heart surgery, the first pediatric heart surgery and the first heart valve surgery. In May 2015, the Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute will move into its new home on the midtown campus of Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento.
