SACRAMENTO — Subramaniam C. Krishnan, M.D., FACC, medical director of Arrhythmia Services for Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute, was honored by the American College of Cardiology for developing and directing electrocardiography training classes for physicians in India earlier this year. He led a team of physicians from the United States that toured different cities in India in June.

The American College of Cardiology has placed increased emphasis on reaching out to developing areas of the world where the prevalence of cardiovascular disease is staggering and often goes undiagnosed. In India, six to eight hour workshops were specifically designed to help primary-care physicians and cardiology trainees to improve ECG interpretation skills.

“We are proud to say that more than 2,000 physicians attended these sessions held in parallel tracks throughout India,” said Elizabeth J. Wilson, a senior director with the American College of Cardiology. “Without a doubt, the ability to better interpret this relatively inexpensive and widely available test will save lives.”

In addition, Wilson said, Dr. Krishnan helped strengthen the collaboration with the Indian Society of Electrocardiology, and the resultant bond will have a positive impact on ACC’s future initiatives in India.

Dr. Krishnan spent the week of June 10 in India, directing teaching sessions in New Delhi, Lucknow, Hyderabad and Madras. He hopes to provide further help in educating physicians in other countries in the future.

“I want to thank the Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute and especially Drs. David Roberts and Zi-Jian Xu for encouraging me to provide this training in India,” Dr. Krishnan said. “I was very fortunate to learn electrocardiography from some of the giants in the field such as Dr. Mark Josephson. By educating other physicians, not only are we saving lives in Northern California, but throughout the world, too.”
