The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame honored orthopedic surgeon Harold Strauch, M.D., with the Distinguished American Award. As one of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame’s most prestigious honors, this award recognized Dr. Strauch for maintaining a lifetime of interest in the game, exhibiting notable leadership qualities, and making a significant contribution to the betterment of amateur football in the United States.

“I’m honored to receive the Distinguished American Award,” said Dr. Strauch. “The National football Foundation and College Hall of Fame are wonderful organizations and I’m grateful they have recognized me.”

Dr. Strauch, medical director for Sutter Orthopedic Institute, has been practicing orthopedic surgery for 49 years. During this time he has provided his expertise as team physician on the football fields of several local colleges. These colleges include American River College, California State University Sacramento (CSUS), Consumnes River College, Sacramento City College and University of California Davis. He also served as the football team physician for several high schools in the Sacramento City Unified School District.

He is responsible for developing the Athletic Care Program at CSUS some 40 years ago for football players. The program expanded to athletes in all intercollegiate sports, including hockey, soccer, basketball and baseball, to name a few.

As the team physician Dr. Strauch committed his time and effort to attend the school’s football and other athletic games in order to provide medical care to the athletes and the team. In addition he assumed responsibility for making medical decisions that affected the player’s safe participation. Dr. Strauch managed injuries that occurred on the field, provided medical management for those injuries, and coordinated rehabilitation and the player’s return to the game.

“There’s a lot of opportunity for injuries in sports,” said Dr. Strauch. “I’ve seen everything from bruises and sprains to torn ligaments and broken bones. We also help athletes who have a sore throat or come down with the flu. There are a variety of ailments to treat.”

Orthopaedic surgeon Alan Hirahara, M.D., and primary care physician Ron Sockolov, M.D., have expanded the Athletic Care Program that Dr. Strauch created at CSUS for the players. Dr. Strauch continues to support the CSUS team while also supporting the Sacramento River Cats, a Triple-A Affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, as one of the team physicians.

As a Distinguished American Award honoree, Dr. Strauch joins B.T. Collins, Francis Quinn, Tom Relles, Lou Blanas and John McVay, a few of the past award honorees.
