Sutter Health’s Memorial Medical Center Intensive Care Unit has been recognized by the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) as the Top Overall Performer for the West Coast Region of the United States. This achievement is a result of Memorial’s participation in the SCCM’s ICU Liberation ABCDEF Bundle Improvement Collaborative – a national project aimed at improving outcomes for ICU patients and their families.

“Our MMC Inter-professional team has been working together for 18 months to implement the ABCDEF Bundle of care,” said Terry Lynch,  Clinical Nurse Educator for Memorial’s ICU, “and we have seen the level of care and the outcomes for our patients and families improve steadily over that time. While the patient outcomes are the most important goal, we are honored to know that the Society of Critical Care Medicine recognized our efforts as the best overall for the West Coast Region.”

The collaborative of 67 Hospitals nationally – 23 in the Western Region alone – have been on the cutting edge of ICU care and patient centered management utilizing a bundle of best practices known as the “ABCDEF bundle.” The bundle focuses on improving performance in the following areas:

  • A: Assess, prevent, and manage pain
  • B: Both SAT + SBT (Spontaneous Awakening Trial + Spontaneous Breathing Trial)
  • C: Choice of analgesia and sedation
  • D: Delirium – assess, prevent and manage
  • E: Early Mobility and Exercise
  • F: Family Engagement

“Our ICU team, just like everyone in our medical center, is dedicated to continuous improvement,” said Daryn Kumar, MMC chief executive officer. “We are all extremely proud of the work the team has put into implementing the ABCDEF bundle, and are grateful to them for their commitment to helping our patients and their families.”

Memorial’s ICU performed so well in implementing the bundle that they were awarded the following:

  1. Western Region Top Overall ABCDEF Bundle Compliance/Performance Award
  2. Top A Bundle Performance Award
  3. Top C Bundle Performance Award
